Changing Your Name After the Wedding

If you change your last name as a result of your marriage, it is important to notify the Social Security Administration.  The Social Security Administration does not charge a fee for making a name change.

Take a certified copy of your marriage license to your Social Security office and complete the necessary form to update the records.  Subsequently, a new card with your changed name (but same number) will be mailed to you.  You can obtain a certified copy of your marriage license from the County Clerk's office 10 days (or more) after your wedding.  There is usually a fee for the license copy.  The Social Security office will not keep your marriage license.  If you can't visit your local Social Security office, call 1-800-772-1213 to arrange to complete the process by mail.

Also, take the certified copy of your marriage license to the Secretary of State's office to have your name changed on your driver's license.

Warning

Soon after your wedding, you may receive a solicitation by mail from a private company offering to help you process your name change for a fee.  Use of that company's services are neither necessary nor timesaving.

A wedding officiant may also be referred to as a:   celebrant, clergy, officiator, officiate, official, pastor, preacher, wedding minister, minister, magistrate, justice of the peace, JP, priest, judge, facilitator, counselor and rabbi.  Rev. Elaine Radloff is a Michigan wedding officiant, MI wedding officiant, (a non-denominational minister) who can officiate your ceremony if you are getting married in Michigan, are having a wedding in Michigan, are having a MI wedding or are wanting to get married in Michigan.  Rev. Elaine will write and perform a wedding ceremony (marriage ceremony) or vows renewal (vow renewals) ceremony with as much of your input as you would like.  Elaine performs indoor weddings and outdoor weddings in Michigan.  Printed ceremony programs are also available. A sample wedding ceremony is included in a packet mailed to you.  Also please remember that getting married online, getting married on the web, or getting married on the Internet, is not legal.  Rev. Elaine Radloff will marry you in person and sign your marriage license so it is a legal marriage, a legal wedding.
